Who are we?

The Historic Churches Preservation Trust (HCPT) is the leading charity which supports essential repairs to churches of all denominations in England and Wales. It was founded in 1953 to help tackle the damage and enforced neglect brought about by the Second World War. Its income is primarily from donations and legacies.

What we do

The HCPT offers grants where the proposed work is structural and essential, where the repairs are in accordance with good conservation practice and where, in spite of good fundraising, the cost will be beyond the local community’s means.

In an average year the trust will assist up to 350 churches and grants of up to £7,500 can be offered subject to conditions. There are also a limited number of larger Millennium Fund grants available in special circumstances.

What we need

It is our aim to keep up the Millennium Fund grants and increase the size of our ordinary grants but we can only do this if more funds are available. To make a donation or legacy or to enquire about a grant or loan please write to:

We can also give you the address of your relevant County Churches Trust which may be able to give advice or funding and which would always be grateful for donations and legacies to help churches in that particular county.
